MANASLU

After two previous attempts in 2021 and 2022 that allowed him to know first-hand the Manaslu, Alex Txikon managed to make history on January 6, 2023, when he managed to tread the Manaslu for the first time in a purely winter expedition and without the help of artificial oxygen.

It all started at 8:00 am on January 4 when Txikon and the group of Nepalese climbers took the necessary material and threw their backpacks on their backs. They had a window of good weather, were acclimatized, and felt they had a good chance of gaining height. The first section of the mountain presented the expected difficulties but they were able to solve them thanks to their great experience. However, the next section, the one that took them to the C2, was, without a doubt, one of the most complicated and dangerous, even spending the night under a huge serac.

On January 5 they headed to the C3 located around 6,950 meters and without hardly batting an eye, at 23:00 hours they left for summit, which they arrived at 9:30 in the morning. The group was made during the day at the height of the pinnacle (7,992 meters), the last stretch before reaching the main summit. After a short journey, finally, all the members of the team reached the top. Afterwards, they began to descend and at 6:00 p.m. they arrived at the base camp. In less than 60 hours they had achieved the challenge. Possibly the most demanding and hard two and a half days of his entire professional career. The extreme cold, the ice and the virulent wind accompanied them throughout the journey. In fact, temperatures dropped to -45º, and wind gusts reached up to 50km per hour.
